What is Septum?

The septum is an anatomical structure which divides the nose in to two separate nostrils. The septum is composed of cartilage and  bone. Under normal conditions, it divides the nose two separate and equal nostrils and that provide to breath effectively from both nasal passage. However, almost 70-80% of people have a deviation in the septum, which can be exist from birth or resulting from traumas during the life, and these patients are diagnosed as septal deviation. Septoplasty is the surgical procedure to correct these deviation.

Every septal deviation should not be operated. Surgical procedure is required in patients with symptoms such as nasal obstruction, difficulty in breathing through the nose, snoring, recurrent nasobleeds, frequent sinusitis infections, continuous nasal discharge or chronic headache.

There anatomical structures in the nose, which are called concha, that facilitate breathing and responsible for moistening the nose. Sometimes, these structure can be large or swollen due to structural properties or allergic causes. This makes breathing more difficult. In addition to septoplasty operation, the concha can also be intervened to obtain better results.
